Lecithin

Diane C.,
I think lecithin is naturally occuring in butter and egg yolk and cocoa.
But the commercial stuff I’ve had in the past was derived from soy.

1200 - 4800 mgs of lecithin….. could someone translate this into
Tablespoons? I bought the loose kind.
Also, which of the EFA’s is in the lecithin? Omega 3 or 6?
I have been using freshly ground flaxseed for awhile now. Then, after
buying a copy of “The Liver Cleansing Diet” I started making up Dr.
Cabot’s LSA (3 parts flax seed, 2 parts sunflower seed, and 1 part
almonds) and keeping it in the freezer. I put it in soups and smoothies,
and on salads. I like the taste a lot better than the plain flax seed.

    Thanks…. I wondered about that 9 mg….. if I needed 1000+ I was
concluding that taking the loose lecithin was not going to be a
    reachable goal. ;~)

    K, you wrote -
“If the softgels contain Lecithin rather than a Lecithin extract,
perhaps 2 - 4 per day, with meals; or what is suggested on the label.
I take about 15g a day (15,000 mg) - but this is out of a 50 cent tin
    of 200g - a much cheaper approach.”

What company makes the tin of Lecithin and where does one get it??

    Thanks in advance, Ben

You should be able to find it in any large food store. Health stores
often stock it too, but at a higher price - still cheap though, all
    considered.

Happy New Year to all in this group.
I have noticed that when I take lecithin capsules my gallbladder acts up
more and I also get a feeling of being depressed and down, even though I do
not normally suffer from depression, then I read info about the side effects
of lecithin, and the book said that it depresses the central nervous system
in some people, so if you suffer from depression this may make it worse in
some people. The book is about vitamins, and the name of the book is ‘The
Right Dose’, I do not know the author, it is an old book so the library
might have it. If there is a supplement that works the same as lecithin and
is relatively safe of bad side effects I would like to know about it.

causing depression surprises me! All that I have read
states that they can fin NO side affects to adding lecithin to the
    diet…
I have been taking it regularly for 4-5 weeks and have felt quite
good mentally. Usually this time of year I get slightly depressed,
because I let down from a very hard year and relax a bit…
As I am thinking about it… I am still at my desk working all day
Saturday… so maybe I just haven’t let down yet!

Well, I got some liquid Lecithin and some granules. I tried the liquid
yesterday and I feel like I’m eating car axle grease, lol, boy that stuff is
thick. I just had one tablespoon, but I guess I should take 2. I’m wondering
if I can just include it in my shake.
I didn’t feel anything after taking it…anyway I’ll keep taking it since
I’ve read all those good reports from you all :-).

    Hi Alexa!
I just put a tablespoon of lecithin in 1-2 ounces of oj. I keep the
liquid lecithin clumped together and drink the clump first. When it
hits the back of my throat I drink the oj… voila… I don’t even
taste the lecithin. The granuales I put into oj also and drink it
    down with little taste!

    Hi Laura…
I really don’t even measure exactly how much I take of lecithin… I
am not sure if 2 Tablespoons is better than one or not….
All I can say is that have not had ANY real symptoms from my gb since
I started on Lecithin… I still take flaxseed oil and bile salts…
but have been eating some cheese and chocolate!
    Still experimenting wth healthy ways!

If you want to take lecithin in pill form how many is one supposed to
take? Please let me know. Thanks

I take about a tablespoon of liquid or 1 1/2 tablespoons of granuales
each morning followed immediately by a tablespoon of organic flaxseed
oil. Both are taken in a little fresh sqeezed oj… so I don’t taste
    a thing!
Taking both together is the best as the lecithin will emulsify or
    break down the flaxseed oil.
I cannot tell you that the lecithin is doing anything for me! The
flaxseed oil I started 4 months agao with terrific results… Most
of my aches and pains from 6-8 hours of full court basketball…
immediately disappeared… so I would take the flaxseed oil even
    without a gb problem.
I also started taking bile salts at the same time I added lecithin…
    I also did a mini-flush 6 weeks ago!
Since that time I have felt just barely… very minor… twinges gb
pain in my back and under the right rib cage. I know I am not cured,

but have had NO stomach aches or problems for the past 4 months!
    Thans’s all I can say…
Remember… if the three most important contributing factors for the
    formation of gallstones are:
    1. High serum cholestorol… lecithin dramatically reduces this!
    2. Low lecithin in the gb to keep the bile smooth… add lecithin!
    3. Low Bile salts… add bile salts!
And 4) Keep the gb flowing with flax seed oil on an empty stomach
    each morning!
I don’t know that there is much more I can do to keep a health gb..
plan on doing a flush each time my symptoms increase
significantly… So far… I can definately live with my faulty gb!
The cure may take some time and it took many years to cause the
    problem!
By the way… the Breakstone Tea arrived… Its not too bad and I
am adding it to my daily routine… This will force me to drink
more. My brother is the only one in the family without gb problems,
most likely because he drinks a gallon of water a day!

Thanks all for the info on lecithing, flaxoil
and bilesalt. This is very encouraging. But where can you buy this
    bilesalt? Thanks,

Thanks Ken for that info. I really appreciate it.
Yes our bodies are wonderfully made.

    Ditto Alexa!
Soft stools 2-3 times a day instaed of my usual 4 a week! So far its
    been a wonder cure…
A highschool basdketball player was complaining of severe shin
splints that he had for 2-3 months… You guessed it! Flax seed oil
cured them in less than a week!
Don… To get heartburn with taking flaxseed oil may mean that your
liver needs a flush… Have you done a flush? Also, lecithin will
emulsify the fats of the flaxseed oil… try taking them together!

Andrea I bake with flaxseed all the time.
I use it in replacements of eggs. Never had any problem and the food
    just tastes great.

I don’t use the oil. I just ground up flaxseeds and use one tbsp. for
    one egg.
I bought a bakinbook at a healthfoodstore and I also asked about that
too. And I know quite a few people who are on a low
colesterol diet and they do the same thing. It works great with pancakes
    and bread.

    Julie,
I take lecithin also, but mix it with a green shake. I have one of those
small mixers–the kind where you push the button on the side and a tiny wand
whirls in the middle and makes it look like a tornado. If you don’t know
what I mean, a regular blender works fine. I put in 8 oz. of water, 1
tablespoon granulated lecithin, 1 tablespoon mixed greens (powdered), and 1
tablespoon mixed fibers. Blend it and it’s great. You could also add any
fruit you like and make a smoothie, if you’re not a ‘greens’ person.
    Hope this helps.

    Tina,
There is also egg lecithin. There are also sources where you can get this in
bulk, but the egg lecithin is hard to find, at least it has been for me.

If I ate a raw egg, would that be the same? People are saying that
lecithin is good, but I believe soy is bad and am looking for another
    form.

    Tina;
You don’t necessarily want to eat an egg raw, but, you certainly can soft
scramble, poach or have it over easy.
I tend to agree with you too regarding the use of soy. However, obtaining
lecithin from the soy bean doesn’t mean you’re getting all the other components
that will cause such things as a lack of protein digestion. We have many
products of which are extracted from flowers, trees or bugs that we get for our
health but wouldn’t be healthy if we tried to eat the main component; flower,
tree, plant or bug. I simply don’t have a problem with using the oil from the
    soy to obtain my lecithin.
